Shell Script: Report External IP Address Via Email

Posted in Uncategorized by Administrator on the March 28th, 2007, 7:12pm

Why would someone want to do this? Well I wanted to do this because my ISP (internet service provider) changes my IP address every 3-6 months for an unknown reason (security?). This makes it hard to host your own webserver. After some searching, I found this script and modified it to my own liking, since it didn’t quite work right when I first got it. I am NOT assuming responsibility if some goofball breaks their computer because they don’t know know what they are doing. Please realize that you will need to install wget and sendmail if you don’t already have them on your Unix system. I will not get into installing these packages in this post. To get this working you will need to set up a cron job to run this script every hour. If the IP hasn’t changed it will not send an email. Here is more information how to set up your cron jobs. Please refer to my last post to send text messages to your cell phone vie email. There is more than enough information on the given websites for the packages. Here is the original script.

Send Text Message Via Email

Posted in Cell Phones by Administrator on the March 15th, 2007, 9:29pm

I have found this to come in handy at times so I figured I would share it with everyone. Most text messages are limited to 110 characters or about. If you send a text message via email and it’s greater than 110 characters then it will send the rest in another message. This is done by the carrier, and you the user don’t need to worry about this. White space is considered a character so keep this in mind if you like to add two spaces after periods out of habit. I found this list and have added to it myself. If anyone else has anything to add to the list just let me know by leaving a comment and I can add it.
For example if you wanted to send a text message via email to 574-555-1234 and you knew the person had verizon wireless as thier cell phone provider then you could do so by sending an email to 5745551234@vtext.com Just check out the list below for the protocol and replace “number” with the appropriate phone number.

openSuse 10.2 Server Running on PII

Posted in Computers, Unix by Administrator on the March 14th, 2007, 10:24pm

Yes you read it right, I’m installing the latest openSuse on a PII 400mhz with 196MB of Ram and a 10GB hard drive. I’m installing a text gui only, no xserver on this biatch. I have already installed Suse on another box and made it dual boot with windows. It was really simple to install and I didn’t have to install any extra drivers with my first install and was a little bit easier since it was a newer system. This second experience has not been that easy. In short it has been the eqivilent of putting a cadillac motor into a Ford Pinto.

Back on Two Wheels

Posted in Motorcycles by Administrator on the March 10th, 2007, 1:46pm

Well, the riding season has begun! Last night Brian and I went riding for the first time together in four months. The last time we rode together was December 2nd, which was almost unbearable due to the how cold it was. We rode over to Andrews house that day and if I remember correctly the temp was middle thirties but the wind chill had to be well below that. Well last night it was in the lower forties and it started raining while we were at mikes house. There is still snow on the ground and we had to be careful of the salt and gravel that is scattered on the road. It was really nice to get back on after not riding for 4 months. My bike started right up, but I did have some trouble starting the SV which is carburated. My RC51 is not carburated which is why it started right up. I kinda forgot how responsive the throttle is on my RC, and had to modulate the throttle to prevent spinning my rear tire. When it started raining I had to be even more careful, there was an instance where Brian took off down CR17 and I tried to keep up with him with out my rear tire spinning and kicking my bike sideways. I think Brians bike is a little bit easier to ride in the rain with since his bike has less torque and he can just whack the throttle with out having to worry too much about the rear tire. I just need more practice with modulating the throttle I guess. I can’t wait to go to the track with my RC. I think I will learn a lot from that experience. Well, I rode to work today and the temp was about 41F with a windchill of 36F or so. It wasn’t unbearable as I had full leathers on. I even had a compliment on my mohawk from the tollbooth attendant! I don’t think she was trying to mock be but was sincere in the compliment. Well Brian is meeting me here at work at 5 so we can ride for a little while. Oh yeah before I forget, Mike bought an 04 R1. His last bike which he crashed and burned on was an 03. His new R1 is a two tone silver and bluish silver, with 6800 miles and is EXTRA clean. You would never know it had that many miles on it just by looking at it. He won’t be able to ride until the end of May, due to an agreement with his wife. I’m pretty excited as it means that we have another person to ride with. Well, I will have be posting some pictures of the bike soon.
