Linux Kernel

Having been a Linux user for many years I’ve come to know a great deal about my preferred operating system. I truly believe the most enjoyable way to learn to use Linux is to tinker with every little thing until you figure out how it works. A good deal of my knowledge comes from endlessly playing with new programs and poking around in configuration files until I master whatever project that occupies my mind this week. I am driven by my determination to one day use Linux as my primary operating system, finally casting Windows off of my hard drives and banishing it to the nether-dimensions from whence it came. In the quest to gain total mastery over Linux I have kept clear of the one task that haunts my dreams and mocks my very existence…compiling the kernel.

For lots of Linux users the kernel is a dark and mysterious thing that should be worshipped as a god, lest it become angry and smite you. So when I was forced recently to recompile my kernel in an attempt to gain ACPI functionality on my new laptop, I was prepared to endure ritual and torment to appease the kernel god for a successful compile. Miraculously, after my fourth day of Googling in preparation for building my kernel, I stumbled across a wholly wonderful post on how to recompile the 2.6 kernel without the need for a blood sacrifice.

I have to tip my hat to the author as this is one of the easiest to read articles on how to compile a kernel ever brought my way by the wide and wonderful internet. After following the instructions, I made short work of my valiant task and was running my custom-compiled kernel in no time. One thing I must note however, is after building the kernel modules I simply needed to do a make install before the kernel would boot properly. I haven’t yet investigated whether this is a step exclusive to Mandriva 2006, or simply an oversight. If anyone out there would like to share their experience with this matter, please add a comment below.

Windows Registry Edit List

I was doing my nightly round of surfing the entire interweb when I ran across this list of 300+ registry edits (regedits) for Windows XP. These are some neat hacks and tweaks you can do to WinXP. You may want to do a Registry Backup before you perform any of these regedits. I’m not responsible if you fubar your system by trying any of these registry edits.

Instant Messaging Encryption

I learned about a new feature that came with my IM client this weekend. It’s called Off-The-Record Encryption (OTR) and automagically comes with Adium X which operates only under OS X. The nice thing about using OTR is that it’s open source! I had never used OTR before and had no way of testing it so I convinced a couple of my friends to install the OTR plugin. There are two versions of the OTR plugin for GAIM so be sure you download the appropriate version. There is a limit of 892 on the number of characters you can send through the plugin. When not using the plugin there is a limit of 896 characters that you can send in a message. note: a space is considered a character.

My Very First Computer

Most of my experience on a computer was not at school but on my best friend Andrew’s computer, which was a Acer Aspire 1100 series. I spent a lot of time at his house chatting on AOL and surfing the web. They even let me create my own AOL screen name on their account, CoryGump82. I can’t for the life of me remember what model the ACER was. I do remember it was a black with a handle on the front. If you pulled the handle you could open the computer up by sliding the computer out from the housing.

I got my first desktop computer as a graduation present from my parents. I got it around my birthday (April) my senior year of highschool (2000). It was a used computer which my parents purchased from “Millions Used Computers” in Southbend. It wasn’t until later that I learned that the guy that owns Millions (Tyrone Miller), is over priced and rips people off. Anyway my first PC was a Compaq Presario 4550. It housed a AMD K6 was a 233 mhz, 48 mb RAM, and a 4 GB hard drive. About the only thing it could do was play music and get on the internet. What more could any teen ager want from a machine? I did try to put a cd burner in it but that did not work out. I think the machine crashed everytime I tried to burn a CD or it would do a buffer under run. I joined the military right after highschool and when I got back from my military school I tried to upgrade my computer and learned that it was not upgradeable. I kept the machine until finally it took a crap (I think the power supply took a shit), and then built my own machine, which was really fun! My boss at work, Ron Deal, helped me set it up. But anyway that was about my first computer. What was your first computer??

Sold my PowerMac G5 Case

I can not believe this and neither may any of you, but in less than 2 hours time (1:59:50 to be exact) I have sold my case. I just got back from Wal-Mart buying mailing tape so that I can tape the box back up that I received it in. Adam S. from Boise Idaho bought my case for $104.00, exactly what I paid for it a month ago. I am taking a loss on it in shipping charges. I do want everyone to know that this is my very FIRST item sold on Ebay. I do not think it will be my last. Ebay and Paypal make this whole internet selling thing very easy. You can still view the G5 Case here and make sure you take note of the auction starting and ending time.

Selling my PowerMac G5 Case

After a little research on modding a G5 Case to house a PC motherboard, I have decided that it’s too much of a hassel for little reward. I purchased this case about a month ago for $104 including shipping in hopes of modding the case. I searched all over the web and found a few good links for instructions on how to install a PC motherboard and power supply.

Although I am still tempted to keep the case and mod it for the “brag” factor, I feel that the feat is not worth the cost and/or the bragging rights. Also I feel that I have better things to invest my time and money into. Say for example my home, and oh yeah weapons/guns. :)
